Carlton Ravens Gear up for Nationals-2019
Notes from the Ottawa Sun.
Sure,
it was another trophy, another championship. But for the Carleton
Ravens men’s basketball team, the real work begins in a few days in
Halifax.
The
Ravens, who beat up the Ryerson Rams 81-61 Saturday night at the
Ravens Nest to win the Wilson Cup — a provincial championship —
will get a shot to go for their 14th national championship in the
past 17 years. How’s that for a dynasty? The Ravens have won 13 of
the past 16 national championships (with Brock in 2008, Saskatchewan
in 2010 and Calgary in 2018 the spoilers). The Dinos win a year ago
interrupted a streak of seven straight national titles for Carleton.
“Obviously
we want to go in and try to win a national championship,” said
Ravens coach Dave Smart. “The draw at the nationals is going to be
really tough so we just go in and play one game at a time.”
Carleton
and Ryerson is a rivalry that’s spiralled – with the teams
squaring off in each of the past four Wilson Cup finals (Carleton won
last season and in 2014-15 and Ryerson took the provincial title in
2015-16 and 2016-17).
The
Ravens beat the Rams 76-69 Jan. 5 at Ryerson, but the Toronto team
won the second match 78-74 Jan. 26 on Carleton’s home court. It was
Carleton’s only loss of the season. Ryerson lost just twice, the
other setback was 88-82 at Laurentian Feb. 9. On Saturday, the Rams
weren’t at their best — their shooting was just off the mark most
of the night – something they’ll have to fix before they face the
rest of the best teams in the country.
